HART, Edwina Lilian (nee Baalim): Passed peacefully away at KGH on February 26, 2015, one month and one day shy of her 100th birthday. Edwina was the only child of Charles and Jessie Baalim, born on March 25, 1915 in Barons, Alberta. After Charles untimely passing in 1924, Jessie and Edwina moved to the M.P. Williams Ranch in Lake Country where Jessie was hired as the cook and homemaker. There Jessie met and eventually married Archie Weighton who Edwina loved dearly. After graduation Edwina moved to Vancouver to attend the VGH Nursing School. While there she met and married the love of her life, Al Christie. Tragically Al died in WW II. Edwina eventually did marry again and gave birth to her treasured daughter Ferne in 1953. Again tragedy struck when Ferne died at 3 years of age. Edwina never got over losing her. Determined to go on with her life, Edwina went back to school, this time to UBC where she obtained her degree as a Public Health Nurse. She served in this career in Grand Forks and the South Okanagan and later in Kelowna. Edwina was a talented pianist and she loved to dance and socialize with her friends. Upon retirement Edwina travelled the world, with many trips to visit her family in Scotland, England and New Zealand. Edwina leaves behind many treasured friends, especially her neighbor Dave and her friend Betty and family. She is also survived by her family Geord Holland, (Jo), their children Chessa, Keda (Jack), Taylor and Tanner, and many other cousins near and far. COCKE, ZONA: AFTER A BRIEF ILL...
COCKE, Zona: After a brief illness, our dear mother, Zona passed away on March 7, 2015 surrounded by family at Moog and Friends Hospice House. Mom was born on February 16, 1929 in Winnipeg Manitoba. She grew up in Athabasca, Alberta with her parents Otis and Fern Nelson, and her brother Dale. Mom had a happy childhood that included friends she remained in contact with for over 65 years. Many memorable family times were spent at the cabin at Baptiste Lake. Mom was fond of swimming, fishing and boating on the lake. She began playing the piano at a very young age. During high school Mom was part of the Teen Town band in Athabasca and played for dances in the neighboring communities. She found time to teach piano and Sunday School as well. She enjoyed playing bridge and was an avid fan of curling and football. Mom's career choice led her into nurses' training at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. Her work took her to hospitals in Alberta, B.C., Alaska and across the U.S. Mom moved to Penticton from Barrhead, Alberta with her first husband Clarence and their children, Kim, Cindy and Kelly Goheen. Always a proud and dedicated nurse, she worked at the Penticton Regional Hospital, the White Clinic and the Penticton Retirement Centre prior to retiring. In 1990 Mom married her childhood sweetheart, Ken Cocke, and moved to the coast. Their 25 years together were full of fun, adventure and travel. Together they enjoyed their RV trips across North America and spent many winters in Arizona. They took numerous cruises and had a wonderful trip around the world. Our Mom was a true champion of education and delighted in the achievements of all her family. Mom returned to Penticton with Ken in 2010. Many early mornings Mom and Ken could be seen walking arm in arm along Okanagan Lake's waterfront. Time spent with her family was always so important to our Mom. She leaves behind her loving husband and dearest friend Ken, her children, son Kim (Vicky), Gillian (Dan), Philip (Candace) and her two great grandchildren Ryan and Ashlyn; her daughter Cindy (Bill Battison) Andrew and Laura; son Kelly (Denise), Alyssa, Carly and Kelly's step-sons Marshall (Yana) Nina, Michael (Lauren) Addy and Merrick. Mom is survived by her two nieces Karen (Doug) and Koree (Chris) and their families. Her three stepchildren, Terry Cocke (Monna), Geoff (Joanna), and Marin (Drew); Laurie Cocke (Marilyn), Graeme (Ali), Brad (Sandy), Michelle (Cory); Leslie Cocke (Colin) Jennifer (Demian) Conor, Callum; and Ken's great grandchildren Asher, Elliott, Hannah, Chloe, Isla and Velocity. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Dr. Lawrie and the staff of Sage Medical, the Palliative Home Care nurses and the staff at Moog and Friends Hospice for their assistance to Mom during this difficult time. We are so grateful for your thoughtfulness, compassion and support.
